Letter-Sound Knowledge

Young children should be exposed to letters in a natural and playful way.  Letter-sound knowledge is a prerequisite to effective word identification.  Here are some ideas involving letter-sound knowledge, the best predictor of reading success:

  • As you ride in the car, have your child find the first letter of their name by looking at street, restaurant and community signs.  Then have them find the last letter of their name.  Once they become confident, challenge them to find the first and last letters of other family member’s names.
